Statement Supporting “Mother” Series
I was born in Los Angeles and have lived most of my life in Los Angeles County.
The murals of the Virgin of Guadalupe have always been on buildings throughout the city. The Virgin is also depicted in a wide range of media and seen in many contexts. This icon is extremely common in Los Angeles. Even those of us who are not of the particular faith that originated this image understand its power and significance. The story and the persona it depicts are familiar. This makes the basic meaning of the shapes, colors, and symbols accessible to a large segment of the population here in Los Angeles.
This series is my personal integration of this icon into my artistic expression. I have long been creating artwork with similar shapes and colors, but have recently begun to respond to this image philosophically and conceptually in the context of my own belief system and concepts of reality.
I find new meanings in the image as I abstract the original and examine it from a new perspective. The traditional associations with the story or symbols do not bind me, so I use the original as an inspired starting point. I am more concerned with the power of the abstraction as it reveals the archetype female forms embedded in the traditional picture. I find these drawings add new dimension of light, color, and energy to my work.
