Artist’s Statement

The artwork that I show on this site is from several series of drawings and paintings that are part of a continuing exploration. I am interested in the essential nature of reality, the energy forces and matrixes that lie at the base of all physical manifestation.

Additionally, I am concerned with creating artworks that invite the viewer to expand their awareness and become a conscious participant in this flow of energy that is around and part of us.

It is a fact that what we perceive as the real world of permanent, solid objects is an illusion supported by the limitations of our five senses. It has been proven the universe is constructed of rapidly moving sub atomic particles unrestrained by space or time. These particles are not only separated by great distances, but in constant motion. The motion of these particles connects everyone and everything in all of creation without boundaries or separation. All matter is forever changing and being reformed.

The work in these series is based on these ideas. I have concentrated on the flux between matter and the void, materialization and potential. This space is not empty, but full of the potential and the raw materials for creation. Even though the dark space surrounds the central image or dominates the top half of the picture plane, it is as much a product of the energy field around it as it is separate. The energy matrix that unites them is evident. One emerges from the other. One is dependent on the other.

The forms swirl and twist together. The edges are active, blurred points of contact where the creative forces that drive the motion merge and reconfigure. The composition and the shapes can abstractly refer to a primordial sky and ground, or symbolically, transformed matter emerging from the void of space to spawn all of creation. The surfaces of the pieces are in motion. We may conveniently divide the picture plane into a top and bottom or a ground and sky, but the surface is a complex matrix of energy without definite boundaries. The reality in this artwork is a dynamic, not an absolute.
